Holiday Notions: Santa Costume

So cool. Someone please show up at a Christmas party looking like this!

No, it's not shopped. Just one amazing woman and her costume, which she calls 'Desaturated Santa'. Check out her picture of the makeup she used on Flickr, and more pictures on toxel.com

Holiday Notions: The festive snowflake

Because we know that you all loved the Star Wars Christmas Special and are searching for a way to express your feelings, we've found a special craft project that you can do...

Just fold a square of paper in half, then in half again, then in half again, stick one of these templates over top, and cut out the black bits. Here's a link to the website we stole the idea from: http://walyou.com/star-wars-snowflakes-paper/
Expect to see some of these in the club room soon!

Double Tron! All the Way!

As our fearless leader Eka mentioned on Friday, there is a special holiday-time movie event in the works. On Dec. 17, (a Friday, incidentally) Tron Legacy comes out in movie theatres. Who wants to watch the original Tron together, then head out as a group to see the new one??
Email sfssoco@gmail.com to let us know if you're up for it. Once we know how many people want to go, we can sort out buying your tickets in advance and decide on places and times.

Let us know!

Holiday Movie Smackdown

This Friday at 5:30, after a game of Quidditch that will run from 4:30 to 5:30, a truly momentous movie night will take place. Assumptions will be challenged. Feelings will be hurt. Minds will be blown.

To understand the complexities of this situation, I feel like a little historical context is necessary:

Lo these many years (at least three years, I think), the SFS has observed the holiday tradition of watching Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and Plan 9 From Outer Space as a double bill. It all started because our former president happened to own copies of both movies on DVD.

This year, our So Co Peter has stirred up some dust by suggesting that we do away with Plan 9, partly because it is truly awful, and partly because it is not Christmas-themed (or Kwanzaa-themed, or Hanukkah-themed, or Ramadan-themed) in any way. He opened up the floor to suggestions for a more festive movie, and there have been some requests for the Star Wars Holiday Special. The only thing in existence that might be of lower quality than Plan 9 From Outer Space.
I'd like to see some spirited debate about this. Present your arguments. What are the relative merits of one vs. the other? I suggest that Gremlins, Chopping Mall and Elves be added to the general tussle. Each one has certain things to recommend it - evil curses, rampaging kill bots, and Nazi science experiments.
With all that in mind: LET. IT. BEGIIIIIIIIIIIIN!!!!!!

(Please note that Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is mandatory, and not debatable. To truly experience the tradition, you must watch the movie in advance by following this link to YouTube. That way you will know to cringe at the right moments. That is all.)

Sing Along Special

This Friday, we present two musicals from the mind of Joss Whedon: Once More, With Feeling the musical episode of Buffy, and Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog. Feel free to print out the lyrics and join the chorus, or obsessively memorize beforehand.
As it was last movie night, so it shall be again. You can come to the club room at 5:30 or Buchanan D201 at around 6, or you can show up at the club at 4:30 to play Quidditch before the show.

PS: the club food and drink supplies should be restocked by Friday, so bring some change :D

A Night to Remember (Remember)

Our next movie night being Nov. 5, we thought it would be appropriate to watch V For Vendetta. Join us in Buchanan D201 at 5:30, or come to the office at 4 for a bracing round of Quidditch before the show.

A chance to get yourself published!

Just passing the message along. If you are interested, you should get in contact with Zi-Ann very soon. Just send an email to ziannlum@gmail.com.

Hi Science Fiction Society!

My name is Zi-Ann Lum and I am the Editor-In-Chief of (UBC) Perspectives. My team and I were just piecing together out November issue and we had a article idea that we think would be best suited for a member of your club if anyone is interested and can write a great entertaining article about.

The issue's theme is Arts & Culture and we wanted to feature a Opinion piece about the fan-fiction phenomenon. The article can be approached from any angle, praising it or criticizing it. Throwing in a couple examples would be great. It by no means has to be formal. We're looking for a short article, around 500-600 words. If you have any aspiring graphic artists, we also welcome a graphic supplement to the article.

If you have any one on your Executive team, general members, or friends that have a opinion about fan-fiction, we welcome your contribution to our November issue. We can put in a plug for your club at the end as well.

Out magazine is also committed to promoting campus club events in one events listing. So if you guys have any events (one-time or on-going) that you're going to hold in November, feel free to submit a event listing under 100 words + event info (where, when, price) and we'll be sure to include it in our Events page. Submissions to our November issue are due on Thursday (October 27th).

Partay Down... for Halloween

Big news, everyone: we are having a Halloween party next Thursday, October 28th. It will be starting at 7 pm and ending at midnight, and it will happen in SUB rooms 211, 213 and 215, which all have those sweet fold-away accordion walls, and can be combined into one big huge room.

There will be movies. There will be games. There will be surprises (which, according to rumour, may involve Kirk and Spock...) and more!
Be there. Wear a costume. We'll geek out together. It will be rad.

Movie Night: Escape From Everywhere!

That's right folks. Kurt Russell (as Snake Plissken) escapes from two cities in one night!
It's about to blow the future apart... You gotta problem with that?
Check out the trailers for Escape from New York and Escape From L.A. I can't do these movies justice with mere words.
Same bat time: this Friday at 5:30
Same bat place: the SFS club office, then somewhere on the second floor of Buchanan D.

Writing Circle

Our Social Coordinator Peter sent this out a while ago, but it bears repeating here, especially if people feel like brainstorming together in the comments section.

Hello SFSers!

In ages past, there was a (admittedly rather short-lived) SFS writing circle. I rather like the idea, so this email is to see if there's any interest in such a thing.

The principle is that a bunch of people get together, read/critique, and generally work on writing. Given that this is, after all, the Science Fiction Society, I will not bother giving you guesses as to what the emphasis would be on.

Either way, get back to me if you're interested! If it seems like there's a critical mass of folks, we'll get some meetings together and get with the writing.

Redesign

No cause for alarm, the content hasn't changed. Just thought I'd try out the bookshelf theme, for obvious reasons if you've seen our club room :)

Movie Night Two: Space Cowboys

This Friday (Oct. 8) we'll be watching two movies based on awesome TV series: Cowboy Bebop and Serenity. If you haven't watched one or both series, I promise the movies won't spoil them!

Come on down to the club room at 5:30 to meet people before the show, or come to the second floor of Buchanan D a little later, where we will find an empty room to screen the movies in.
I've made a helpful map for those who still need to find the club room. The blue star is roughly our location and the little yellow arrows are pointing to doors you can use to get in there. Once you have found the secret club room hallway, just look for the door with "SFS" on it.

Welcome Back!

Hi SFSers, I'm Adriana.

As your new VP, I am proud to announce this week's Friday night double feature. We'll be watching Repo: The Genetic Opera, and Repo Men, which is the same concept but with Jude Law.
Peter, our new Social Coordinator, will send out details via email, but expect a walk to Buchanan D at around 5:30 in the evening, and free pizza.

In other news, we're hitting the SUB for Clubs Days this week. From Wed. Sept. 22 to Friday Sept. 24, look for a guy in a beaver costume. That's our mascot!
Membership this year is $6, so if you haven't renewed it yet, come on down. Bring your friends! We'll be playing Duck Hunt and chugging Cheetah High Octane Beverage (with Ginseng).

This is your Vice President Adriana Byrne, signing off.
