About Us

At it's heart, the SFS is an informal conglomeration of people who tried growing up, and then, upon some consideration, decided it wasn't really for them. If you want the security of knowing that all your Star Wars references will be caught, or that the people around you will 'get' your t-shirt with a meme on it, or that any discussion you open on the subject of Harry Potter, or the Legend of Zelda, or steampunk, or Firefly, or jetpacks, or internet culture, or dinosaurs (or any other wonderful thing you love) will be happily carried on with gusto, this is a community you will like, and we will like you, too.

We hold regular movie nights on Friday evenings where we get together to enjoy science fiction and fantasy films that range from big budget productions like Pacific Rim to cult classics like Death Race 2000, Rollerball, and White Zombie. We are always open to suggestions from our members and greatly enjoy watching films suggested by our members that we may not have been introduced to on our own.

We also organize events like themed parties, Boffer Sword fighting, picnics (as long as the weather allows), and scavenger hunts, as well as group outings to other science fiction and fantasy related events in the city. Our club room is equipped with the largest non-academic library on campus from which we're glad to lend out books to our members. Of course, we cannot promise you that we will be up to speed on every aspect of science fiction and fantasy - but if we don't know about it, we most definitely want to!

The SFS prides itself on being a welcoming community, and we hope that you will find a place with us. We are open to members regardless of whether or not you are a student at UBC. If anything that you have heard or read about us has caught your eye, please don't hesitate to shoot us a message or drop by the club room, room 3206D in The Nest, during office hours - the link to which can be found at the top of the page.
